This morning, start your day with a Sand Bath ‘Sunayu’ Experience and Swan Viewing at Kussharo Lake (屈斜路湖). In the Hokkaido winter months, the largest caldera lake of Japan becomes home to a large number of migratory whooper swans. The surface of the lake freezes but along the shore there is a hot spring, making it a perfect bath spot for the swans and a photo spot of the scenery and over 300 swans. Next, visit Lake Mashu Observatory (摩周湖展望台), where you will take in panoramic views of one of Japan’s clearest and most mysterious crater lakes – often shrouded in mist, adding to its mystical allure. Continue on toMount Io-zan (硫黄山), an active volcanic peak known for its dramatic sulfur vents and steaming landscapes – a striking reminder of Hokkaido’s geothermal power. Thereafter, you will proceed to a local restaurant for lunch [KaisenDon]. After, visit Abashiri Prison Museum (網走監獄博物館), a fascinating open-air museum showcasing the harsh history of Hokkaido’s early penal system and its role in the region’s development. Then, explore the Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum (オホーツク流氷館), where you can learn about the unique drift ice phenomenon of the Sea of Okhotsk and even touch real ice in the museum’s chilling “ice room”. Finally, transfer to the hotel for check in and dinner [Kaiseki].
